What actually changes between the materials?

The Copper Development Association explains that conductivity varies with alloy composition and processing. A request for ‘copper’ therefore leaves an important question unanswered: which copper specification? The same principle applies to aluminium wire.

The Aluminum Association highlights aluminium’s conductivity relative to its weight. That can make it relevant where weight matters, but it does not make a same-diameter replacement appropriate. An electrical application needs its own approved conductor specification and compatible connections.

Put these details in the enquiry

A complete request helps a supplier answer a narrower, more useful question. If you are replacing an existing material, send its written specification or a legible label. A photograph can help identify the form, but it cannot establish an alloy, conductivity or tolerance.

  • Material grade and any applicable standard or drawing revision.
  • Diameter in millimetres, with the permitted tolerance.
  • Required condition or temper and the intended manufacturing process.
  • Quantity, coil or spool requirements, and any handling limits.
  • Testing or documents needed, delivery postcode and required date.

Compare quotations on the same basis

Before comparing totals, check that both quotations answer the same specification. Record the quantity basis, packing, transport, taxes, lead time and quote validity separately. A lower material rate is difficult to assess if one quote leaves out packing or delivery.

If a supplier proposes an alternative material or size, put that proposal back through your design or production approval process. A purchasing enquiry should not silently change an engineering requirement. For electrical use, have the responsible qualified professional approve the conductor and installation specification.

An enquiry you can adapt

Replace every bracket with your actual requirement. If you do not know a field, mark it ‘to confirm’ instead of guessing. BIS’s standards portal can help you find a relevant Indian Standard and check its current details.
